September 1913

What need you, being come to sense,
But fumble in a greasy till
And add the halfpence to the pence
And prayer to shivering prayer, until
You have dried the marrow from the bone;
For men were born to pray and save;
Romantic Ireland’s dead and gone,
It’s with O’Leary in the grave.

Yet they were of a different kind,
The names that stilled your childish play,
They have gone about the world like wind,
But little time had they to pray
For whom the hangman’s rope was spun,
And what, God help us, could they save?
Romantic Ireland’s dead and gone,
It’s with O’Leary in the grave.

Was it for this the wild geese spread
The grey wing upon every tide;
For this that all that blood was shed,
For this Edward Fitzgerald died,
And Robert Emmet and Wolfe Tone,
All that delirium of the brave?
Romantic Ireland’s dead and gone,
It’s with O’Leary in the grave.

Yet could we turn the years again,
And call those exiles as they were
In all their loneliness and pain,
You’d cry `Some woman’s yellow hair
Has maddened every mother’s son’:
They weighed so lightly what they gave.
But let them be, they’re dead and gone,
They’re with O’Leary in the grave.

In case you were wondering…

In case you were wondering what great photography looks like…look no further than Amy Horn’s work. You can see some of it on her blog amylynnehorn.blogspot.com, but I just came across this photo of Josh and my best friends, Devin and David from their engagement shoot early last year and I can’t even stand how lovely it is. They’re beautiful people (obviously), and the photography in and of itself is outstanding.

So if you’re in South Florida and need a photographer, I would try and get Amy.

Wow.

Spotlight on a champion

In my sisters house they have a big loft area that has become the kids play area. It’s perfect for them…except for the fact that that it’s…a loft. It has a half wall that drops straight down to the tile floor below. This wasn’t a big deal until my sister and her husband had a boy. My nephew Weston is as boy as they come and climbing things is just one of his ways. So, like the awesome Dad he is, my bother in law decided to finish that wall up to the ceiling. I just want to show you all his efforts and what a good dad he is.

gathering supplies

he had to spend a few hours in the attic on a hot summer (in florida) day

in the home stretch

now on to the door

door frame ready to have a door put in (already safe for the kid-o’s)

Oh, also, they’re on a budget that makes Josh and Me look like we’re rolling in it, so he’s doing this all himself. Like I said, Champion. Way to go, Chris!

Easy Peasy Pot Pie

photo
So, you take the pulled crock pot chicken that you now just always have on hand because it’s so easy and you mix it with frozen peas, carrots, and corn. Add some fresh herbs like cilantro and then add a can or two of cream of mushroom or cream of potato to that mix. Stir, add salt and pepper, pour into a frozen pie crust. Then top the whole thing with a pre-made pie crust top and bake it at 350 for an hour.

Do cut a whole in the top crust, DON’T try and cut a letter…you’ll just look like an idiot. Enjoy!

Guest Post: Book Review

In the spirit of encouraging more reading, I’ve decided to add some book reviews of the books I’m reading. Yay book! Yay nerds!
…ok, I’m done.

So, Reconstructing Amelia, by Kimberly McCreight. Oh. My. Goodness. This book was good. It was one of those books where you don’t know what truly happened until the very last page…which drives you crazy in a way, but is really the best thing ever. Now stop! I know you want to go read the last page now, but don’t! It’s worth the read. I read it in about 4 days; Adora read it in two. To be fair, she has a longer attention span, but that’s how good it is.

The narration goes back and forth between Amelia in the past and her mother Kate in the present. And of course there’s the random letter or text conversation thrown in for good measure. It all keeps you guessing about what could have happened to Amelia, and how it all played out. It’s not a spoiler (maybe a tiny spoiler) to tell you, Amelia dies in the beginning. First chapter. But did she commit suicide? Or was she pushed? Or was she perhaps manipulated by…well, who? So. Many. Questions.

Secret clubs, murder or suicide, piecing together the past…just go read it. Definitely one of my top picks so far this year.

Crockpot pulled beef

One well planned session with the crock-pot can give you countless dinner options. Here is how I made some pulled beef in the crock pot and a few of the serving options that it set me up with for the week…

Add salt, mrs dash, and any sauce you want to a big slab of beef. This one was $10 for a little over 2 pounds.

remove from crock pot and shred [it's a little harder to shred than crock pot chicken, but not too bad]

I’m sure there are many other options, but this is what I ended up making…How do you serve up crock pot pulled beef?
